COACHING IN FAMILY OWNED BUSINESS |
Executive Coaching in Family Enterprises... |
| |
Your
employees, your most important resource, are being asked to respond to
changing situations faster than ever before. A wide range of strategies, ranging
from the barest essentials to sophisticated educational and experiential
programs, are employed in small to mid-market businesses to develop
people to perform in this time of rapid change. Coaching
is emerging as the most effective method for learning and integrating new
information, becoming increasingly popular to help executives grow and
achieve increased effectiveness. Coaching is designed to help
individuals improve their performance, enhance the quality of their
lives, and to make a significant difference to the long term success of
the business.

Business Ownership by Unrelated Families... |
|
Are businesses considered family owned if ownership is
shared by unrelated families? We
believe the answer is an unequivocal "yes."
On
more than one occasion we have encountered privately held businesses
founded by a group of unrelated partners. In each case, the founding partners have transferred stock to
their offspring so that ownership is moving into a group of families
between which there is neither blood line nor marital connection.
In
each of these situations we have been asked by the owning families
whether the basic principles that apply to traditional family businesses
apply to them. There seems to be a
presumption on their part that the practices which make for successful
family businesses may not apply. Our answer has always been that the only difference is the absence
of traditional linkages between the families. In our view and to our experience,
while the exception of this single factor, all the other philosophical
underpinnings, challenges and opportunities continue to exist. Best practices for traditional family
businesses remain best practices for these businesses as well. (continues...)

The
3G Transition... |
by John M. Roberts
It was a little over three and a half years ago at
a family meeting when 3G (third generation) said to 2G (second
generation), "We think we need a family business consultant to help
us with 3G transition."
We didn't have all the answers so 3G was encouraged
to take the lead and begin the search for a consultant.
My sister and I and our spouses are 2G and both
active in the business. Our six
children and their spouses are 3G and three are active. We are a close family and have had
enjoyed retreats and various outings together for years. There has never been any doubt that we
were committed to continuing as a family business. 2G purposefully added adult 3G's to our
board as soon as practical as a way to better educate them about the
business, our values and the merits of remaining independent.
